Unlike emergency ambulances, ambulances are crewed by people with less training and are outfitted with life-supporting equipment. Although they often offer both emergency response and patient transfer, an ambulance service's main responsibility is to provide emergency pre-hospital medical care. Between potentially fatal circumstances and moments of life-saving action are ambulances.

In Chennai, India, the Mother Teresa Charitable Trust launched this ambulance service in 2007. The ambulance is currently affiliated with the Church of South India Diocese's Kanyakumari Medical Mission Hospital Neyyoor, which offers free ambulance service to the impoverished of Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari area. Additionally, it serves as a mobile cancer research unit. The ambulance provides free transportation for the ill to hospitals.
