ACWADAM's action research has spanned two decades now. Moreover, its action research is backed by more than 35 years of conventional academic research Read more by its founder trustees. The focus of this research is groundwater management. The action research has included scientific aspects of developing implementable plans for groundwater management, without overemphasising the need to publish research in a classically academic mode. The conventional over-emphasis on scientific precision in aquifer understanding, ironically casts a mysterious mask on the pedagogy of groundwater as a common pool resource whereas this very aspect should become fundamental to many public programmes dealing with water, given India's large dependency on groundwater resources. In many ways, this contradiction leads to a disregard of science in various programmes.
Action
ACWADAM conducts action research, capacity building, and science-based advocacy with communities and policymakers to develop strategies for groundwater management based on hydrogeological understanding of groundwater resources in the context of communities and livelihoods.

Impact
ACWADAM has partnered with a wide range of organizations across India to embed groundwater management within rural livelihoods and natural resources management, demonstrating solutions in challenging areas like flood plains, mountainous terrain, and tribal hinterlands.
Vision & Mission
ACWADAM's mission is to stimulate and facilitate work related to groundwater management in various parts of India through partnerships, while evolving into an institution that works on aquifer-based groundwater management.
Programs
-
Aquifer Based Groundwater Management
Aquifer-Based Groundwater Management focuses on sustainable use of groundwater by treating aquifers as distinct units with defined physical and hydraulic limits. Unlike traditional groundwater management, which often targets wells and pumping systems, this approach emphasizes the importance of aquifers as whole systems, including their recharge and discharge areas. By understanding and managing these natural groundwater "catchments," aquifer-based strategies enable tailored, sustainable solutions that prioritize the resource itself, ensuring balanced groundwater use and long-term availability.
-
Aquifer And Agriculture
Aquifer and Agriculture program highlights the critical role of groundwater in India's agriculture, which supports nearly 70% of irrigated farming. The program addresses the unsustainable exploitation of aquifers due to the absence of a dedicated groundwater policy. It emphasizes the need for sustainable practices to protect this essential resource, aiming to secure agricultural livelihoods. Research focuses on groundwater's impact on rainfed farming, soil moisture, and irrigation, integrating aquifer management protocols to enhance resource security and support agrarian growth.
Milestones & Track Record
ACWADAM has provided significant inputs to developing the National Aquifer Mapping Programme during India's 12th Five Year Plan and is playing a pivotal role in developing knowledge-driven management of spring water resources in the Himalayan region.
