Sterilisation of Stray Dogs
In India, the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001, mandates the sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs to control their population, prevent rabies, and reduce human-canine conflicts. Population stability is achieved when 70% of stray dogs are sterilized.
Sterilization is the most effective and sustainable method to control stray dog populations, as opposed to methods like relocation or killing, which have proven ineffective. Many countries have adopted sterilization after realizing its success in managing stray populations.
Sterilization prevents stray dogs from reproducing by surgically removing their reproductive organs, thus reducing the number of offspring over time. This not only decreases the population but also curbs territorial and aggressive behaviours associated with reproduction.
Additionally, sterilized dogs are less prone to health issues such as mammary tumours, uterine infections, and testicular cancer. In some cases, sterilization programs are combined with vaccination and adoption efforts to further reduce stray numbers and enhance animal welfare.

Awareness Campaigns
Conduct awareness campaigns to promote kindness towards stray dogs and encourage societal responsibility. These initiatives focus on:
Raising Awareness: Highlighting issues like overpopulation, abandonment, and abuse, while emphasizing sterilization as the key solution.
Promoting Responsible Pet Ownership: Educating on spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and adopting from shelters.
Encouraging Adoption and Fostering: Showcasing the benefits of adopting stray dogs and their unique qualities.
Animal Behavior and Safety: Teaching safe interaction, especially for children, to prevent incidents.
Community Involvement: Organizing clean-ups, spay/neuter drives, and fostering collective responsibility for stray dog welfare.
Social Media Engagement: Raising awareness and sharing success stories via online platforms.
Collaboration: Working with local authorities to advocate for stronger animal protection policies.
