John Paul Slum Development Project ( JPSDP ) is an NGO working for the poorest of the poor by implementing various projects for the direct benefit of Read morethe beneficiaries. JPSDP found a lady kept in the cage meant for animals in the year 1995. Upon enquiring, he learnt that she was suffering from HIV and was very sick. Her health was very bad when we rescued her and got her admitted into a government hospital. Since then, we started concentrating on HIV prevention and care programs. We also found a lot of street children on the street staying in a very bad unhygienic condition and we started a shelter home for them at Yerwada in Pune City. We are implementing this program with great financial difficulties and today we have more than 130 children who are victims of various social atrocities. We are working on various issues such as : 1. Running shelter home for street children, children of sex workers, orphans and semi-orphans. 2. Prevention of Mother to Child transmission of HIV. 3. STI/HIV prevention and care program for commercial sex workers. 4. Providing information to pregnant women for safe motherhood. and promoting institutional delivery of the child. 5. Providing information to HIV positive pregnant women on mobile for safe motherhood and promoting institutional delivery of the child.

SEX WORKER SUPPORT (MUKTA)
Within JPSDP, the major project is the sex worker support programme. The Boston-based fundraising organisation Pathfinder International introduced and provided the initial money for it. The Mukta project is a wider initiative of which the JPSDP programme is a component. Mukta, which means liberation in Hindi, is an initiative spearheaded by Pathfinder International that seeks to enable sex workers to combat stigma and take charge of their own lives. Mukta was carefully crafted to provide a robust network of support systems. As of right now, the initiative has changed, and the Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) is currently in charge. Three types of sex workers—all of which exist in Pune—are the subject of this project.

STREET CHILDREN SHELTER HOME (GHARTA)
One hundred street children from all across Pune have a place to live thanks to the Street-Children Shelter. They hail from diverse backgrounds and are dispersed throughout the city. It is not an orphanage. For whatever reason, their parents are unable to care for them (too impoverished, alcoholic, sex workers, etc.). Counsellors from the JPSDP locate the kids and collaborate with the family to provide a place for the kids to live at the shelter. The kids in the shelter follow a more regimented routine and go to a government school every day. They get three meals a day and are seen by a JPSDP doctor for routine checkups. The kids are free to go see their parents. For children who have experienced trauma regularly, this facility offers stability.
It gives people an equal chance to become educated and take charge of their own life.
