The Humsafar Trust was founded with an aim to reach out to the LGBTQ community in Mumbai and its surrounding areas. It partners with reputed organisat Read moreions working to control HIV/AIDS to create awareness about the disease among the LGBTQ community. It conducts screenings amongst the community and distributes contraceptives in a bid to contain the virus. It also fights for the rights of this specific community in the courts of justice and have filed petitions protecting their rights.

Capacity Building Programmes
To extend its reach, it mentors other organisations in the same field of work. With years of experience behind it, the Trust provides guidance and direction to community-based organisations. Partnering with MAC AIDS FUND, it provides ongoing support for HIV interventions which are specifically tailored to the LGBTQ community.

Advocacy Programmes
The Trust is actively involved in presenting the opinions of the LGBTQ community to the general public and sensitizing them through literary media like plays, films, workshops, community mobilization efforts, media and corporate engagement and fighting for the rights of the community.

Health Programmes
The Trust promotes safe sexual behaviour amongst the LGBTQ community and works with the goal to reduce the occurrence of HIV. It works to improve their access to healthcare facilities and reduce the stigma attached to the community. It runs three programmes Project Aarambh, Project Dostana and Project Yarana, all with the aim of increasing check-ups and controlling the spread of HIV.

Research Programmes
Research forms an integral part of the Trust’s work. Its studies have played an important role in informing, designing and guiding interventions pertaining to the HIV related risk behaviours of men having sex with men (MSM). It has conducted research to study the relationship between clinical and behavioural data to find out the speed of the spread of the HIV virus.
The Humsafar Trust is the first community-based organisation that has set up its own Institutional Review Board collaborating with the National Institute of Health(NIH), with a Federal Wide Assurance (FWA) certification.
