Driven by the belief that ecological milestones can only be achieved through synergy between science, economy, and society, NEWS places communities at the core of its conservation strategy. The organization works across diverse themes such as ecology and environment, wildlife conservation, natural resource management, and climate resilience, with a special focus on integrating gender sensitization and empowerment into its programs. Programs

  • Ecology & Environment Conservation

The Ecology & Environment Conservation Program empowers students with a solid foundation in ecological principles, wildlife biology, and ecosystem dynamics. Participants explore community and population ecology, habitat management, conservation genetics, and human–wildlife interactions. Through a mix of classroom learning and hands-on field experiences—like lab work, species sampling, and GIS mapping—they gain practical research and analytical skills. Graduates emerge ready for roles in natural resource management, environmental consulting, government agencies, conservation NGOs, or as a stepping stone to further graduate study. The program emphasizes a holistic, data-driven approach to address complex ecological challenges.

  • Wildlife Conservation Initiatives by Nature & Wildlife Trust

Nature & Wildlife Trust has implemented a diverse range of wildlife conservation projects across India, focusing on species habitat protection, conflict mitigation, and biodiversity monitoring. From July 2017 to June 2019, the Trust successfully relocated jackals at Kolkata’s NSCBI Airport to reduce human–wildlife conflict. A partner-led survey (2017–2019) assessed the distribution and abundance of Fishing Cats in wetlands across West Bengal. More recently, between December 2020 and November 2022, a cross-border initiative in India and Nepal facilitated human–elephant coexistence at the Himalayan foothills. Additionally, from January 2021 to December 2022, the Trust conducted a nationwide study on the status and threats to swamp deer (Rucervus duvaucelii) across multiple Indian states.

  • Community-Based Natural Resource Management

The program empowers local communities in the Congo Basin—including Cameroon, CAR, DRC, Gabon, and Republic of Congo—to steward forest resources through legally granted community forests (max 5,000 ha) and Simple Management Plans. WWF supports acquiring and managing these forests, strengthens legal and institutional frameworks, builds capacity, and fosters sustainable income opportunities from timber and non-timber products. Since 2003, it has helped 28 communities secure forests, drafted 43 management plans, established four tree nurseries, trained officials/NGOs, sensitized over 2,000 locals, and built market links for forest products.
