Issue

Historical context of mental health treatment in India All over the world mental illness has been a cause of discrimination and social stigma. This has far too often determined the isolation and segregation of people affected by mental disorders, who would normally be condemned and ostracized to lead a life of struggle and suffering. This has also been the case in India and West Bengal, where over the past 200 years bleak mental institutions and prisons became the final repository for people affected by mental illness. Conditions in mental health facilities and prisons were invariably appalling and psychological or psychiatric care for patients was virtually non-existent. In addition to this, physical violence, sexual abuse and torture were common and widespread.

Action

Holistic Rehabilitation of Women with Mental Illness. The progress of our project may be quantified by the increased number of mentally ill women being rehabilitated and integrated with their families within a given span of time e.g. 1 year and other are immeasurable, like a cheerful ambience at the halfway home and smiles on the lips of our beneficiaries and their families.

Impact

The main objective of the project is to provide free of cost residential psychosocial rehabilitation to mentally ill women belonging to weaker sections of society. Without going into semantics, to us the word ‘impact’ carries the meaning of significant change, when, an almost ostracized mentally ill woman is guided to pick up the lost pieces of her life, which prepare her for her natural home and help her integrate with the family and society at large and to lead a productive and meaningful life, once again. The main goal of Paripurnata is to reintegrate the beneficiaries with their families. Also, our programme of ‘follow up of our ex-Residents for at least for three years’, is quite fruitful. But quite a sizeable number of the ex-Residents remain outside the scope of this programme, as they are located at far off places.

Vision & Mission

Paripurnata strives to usher a society where equally, justice and peace prevails, without any discrimination and marginalization on basis of caste, creed, gender, economic status, disease and disability.
MISSION
Paripurnata envisages championing the cause of the marginalized mentally ill women and strive for their mainstreaming in society in order to restore their rights and dignity.
