Appropriate Technology India (AT India) is a pioneer organisation in the Central Himalayan Region, dedicated to improving livelihoods and conserving t Read morehe environment. It focuses on diversifying bio-resource-based livelihoods, such as beekeeping, sericulture, and off-season vegetable farming, to enhance ecological balance and the well-being of mountain communities. With expertise in disaster recovery, including floods and landslides, it implements innovative strategies for poverty reduction and sustainable development. Guided by its mission, "Conservation Through Enterprise Development," AT India empowers rural and marginalised groups, especially women and youth, by building resilience, skills, and capabilities for a better future.

Impact

Appropriate Technology Indiah has implemented 25 projects across 23 development blocks and 51 clusters, impacting 998 villages, 22,505 stakeholders, including 19,109 women and 2,384 minority beneficiaries, while covering 1,000 hectares under plantation, forming 2,367 self-help groups, and establishing 12 farmer producer organisations.

Programs

  • Natural Resource Management

The Himalayan region, rich in unique biodiversity, serves as a vital refuge for species migrating due to climate change. As part of environmental conservation efforts, over 700 hectares across Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Tehri, Almora, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, and Dehradun have been planted with Quercus serrata, achieving a 95% survival rate. Services focus on sustainable natural resource use through practical research and piloting solutions, emphasizing climate change adaptation and mitigation in mountainous areas.

  • Livelihood Enhancement

Mountain communities rely heavily on forests for their livelihoods, but environmental degradation has led to resource scarcity, prompting rural outmigration, particularly among males, in search of urban employment. Efforts focus on innovative livelihood interventions and poverty reduction strategies. AT India adopts a value chain development approach to enhance incomes by improving access to information, financial services, and micro-finance, while strengthening farmers' groups, cooperatives, and agri-businesses and identifying niche products through value chain analysis.
