Green Hills Trust initiated a project named "Community Forests that mitigate climate change" in 2019, funded by Banyan Tours and the District’s Kosi Rejuvenation Fund. Focusing initially on Maat village's community forest, it addressed the challenges posed by pine forest proliferation, leading to frequent forest fires and water depletion. With approval from the village forest committee, Green Hills undertook "forest scaping" to restore indigenous trees like Himalayan cedar and oak. Activities included removing invasive species, trenching for water conservation, and planting saplings nurtured by students. Despite challenges like theft of tree guards and damage by animals, the project aimed to create dense indigenous forests using innovative methods developed by Professor Miyawaki. Additionally, Green Hills engaged village children through educational camps during school closures due to COVID-19, fostering a sense of attachment to the forest and environmental stewardship.
