  • Since

    1992

Bhil Seva Mandal, Dahod, established in 1923 by Amritlal Vithaldas “Thakkar Bapa”, is a distinguished NGO committed to uplifting tribal communities—pa Read morerticularly the Bhil—across eastern Gujarat. Born out of the response to the devastating 1918–19 famine in Panchmahal, its founding was inspired by the urgent needs witnessed by Mahatma Gandhi and addressed by leaders like Sukhdev Trivedi, Indulal Yagnik, and Thakkar Bapa himself. With its headquarters on Thakkarbapa Road in Dahod, the organization has grown from a famine-relief initiative—providing subsidized grain, clothes, and livestock assistance—to a multifaceted social welfare institution. Its core mission now revolves around education, health, hygiene, women’s empowerment, agricultural support, cooperative formation, and eradicating entrenched superstitions . Over the decades, Bhil Seva Mandal has pioneered tribal Ashram schools in Jhalod, Jeswada, and Mirakhedi, operated fully by tribal coordinators—true to Thakkar Bapa’s vision that tribal leadership must drive community progress. The Mandal’s 2023–24 annual report highlights its continued momentum, celebrating collaboration with government bodies, corporate CSR initiatives, and notable dignitary visits such as Gujarat’s Education Minister, Chief Minister, and Governor .

Programs

  • The Ashram School Initiative

Since its inception in 1923 by Amritlal Vithaldas Thakkar (known as Thakkar Bapa), the Bhil Seva Mandal has championed the transformative potential of residential education for tribal children through its Ashram Schools. These schools, set up across Jeswada, Jhalod and other tribal regions, offer free lodging, boarding, and instruction grounded in community life, character building, and practical skills such as agriculture. Emphasizing discipline, hygiene, and cultural pride, the initiative ensures tribal youth gain academic foundations while staying connected to their traditions. Over a century later, the program continues to uplift and empower generations of tribal students.
