Foundation for Ecological Security(FES) promotes informed action on nature conservation, natural resource management, local self-governance and sustai Read morenable livelihoods for the people in rural areas. It is achieved by finding ways to improve local employment, livestock production and farm productivity to strengthen the governance of natural resources. It works to link the people to the commons, help local communities retain their rights over commons, for sustainable land-use practices that aid conservation, and create economic opportunities. Commons is 205 million acres of India’s geographical area with community forests, pastures and water bodies. These are shared resources for the ecological and livelihood needs of more than 350 million of India’s rural poor. It works to regenerate and conserve forests, pastures, water bodies and biodiversity that has degraded over the years and connect the farmers and livestock keepers with the conservation of natural resources. It conducts independent initiatives or coordinates with the local community, village institutions, federal bodies and civil society organisations and public or private organisations to achieve sustainable and economic solutions. It collaborates with Panchayati Raj, democratic village institutions and civil society organizations to provide technical and financial assistance for these projects also undertaking and sponsoring studies and research on ecological processes, endemic and endangered species.

Programs

  • Forests in a Landscape

FES works with local communities to come up with context-based action plans to protect the environment and also increase incomes. It attempts to link forests to production systems resulting in the people protecting forests with agriculture and forests going hand in hand.

  • Tenure over Commons

FES facilitates the rights of communities over common resources. It helps villagers procure long-term leases over forests leading to an increase in grassland availability.

It advises communities to register wastelands in the vicinity in prohibitory order books or Panchayat registers to limit their use by antisocial elements.

Essentially, FES believes that all land must be under the watchful eyes of the community for it to grow and prosper.

  • Right to Employment and Resources

It supports village institutions to line up with common resources and connect them to employment acts. This ensures proper decision-making helping the local institutions to effectively implement programmes such as the MGNREGS leading to gainful employment and activities aimed at protecting the environment.

It interacts with Central and State Governments to allocate more investment in natural resources. It encourages communities to use technology to gauge soil health and moisture to increase the chances of soil conservation.

  • Working with Panchayats

FES believes in strengthening village-level institutions like Panchayats to act as nodal authorities regarding ensuring the responsible use of natural resources.

It makes location-specific information available to the institutions to enable them to take decisions and ensure access to rights. It works to connect the Panchayats, Block and the village and encourage collaborative effort.

It ensures the direct allocation of resources to the village institutions to enable proper governance and link the economy, society and ecology.

  • Farm and Farming Systems

It strives to interconnect farming systems and tries to trigger healthy discussions on water as a shared resource leading to an appreciation by all as to its importance and the importance of conserving it and sharing it responsibly.

It encourages activity to protect the habitat of pest predators like bees, birds and spiders to make farming systems more resistant and also promotes diversified cropping methods to maintain the constant flow of income.
