  • Since

    1977

Established in 1977 as an institution under the Nehru Foundation for Development (NFD), the Vikram Sarabhai Centre for Development Interaction (VIKSAT Read more) has been dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainable development. Its primary mission is to foster collaboration among individuals and organizations to protect the environment and to establish People's Institutions (PIs) for the sustainable management of natural resources. Over the past four decades, VIKSAT has evolved from a platform for intellectual discourse to an active advocate for community rights over forests and their resources. The organization has implemented various innovative initiatives, including water harvesting, joint forest management, biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, and climate-proofing interventions. These efforts aim to build climate resilience within communities and have involved the installation of solar pumps, drip irrigation systems, mulching practices in crop cultivation, soil and water conservation, and the establishment of forward and backward linkages through Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs).

Action

VIKSAT implements sustainable Natural Resource Management and livelihood activities through field offices in 5 districts of Gujarat, focusing on land and water management, sustainable livelihoods, institution building, WASH, and environment/climate change.

Impact

VIKSAT has directly impacted over 50,000 households in 615 villages across 7 districts of Gujarat and 27 aspirational districts in 8 states of India through its initiatives and capacity building efforts.

Vision & Mission

VIKSAT aims to promote and strengthen people's institutions through interactions for equitable, gender-sensitive, sustainable development and management of natural resources.

Programs

  • Land and Water Management

The program focuses on promoting sustainable agricultural practices through effective conservation and utilization of natural resources. The program emphasizes watershed management, rainwater harvesting, soil conservation, and sustainable irrigation techniques to enhance agricultural productivity and environmental resilience. By engaging local communities, the initiative ensures participatory decision-making, fostering long-term ecological balance and livelihood security. Through capacity-building programs and technology-driven solutions, VIKSAT empowers farmers to adopt eco-friendly methods, combat climate change effects, and ensure water sustainability, ultimately contributing to rural development and food security.

  • Sustainable Livelihoods

The Sustainable Livelihoods program focuses on enhancing economic stability and self-reliance among rural communities. By promoting sustainable agriculture, natural resource management, and skill development, the program empowers individuals to improve their quality of life while preserving the environment. It facilitates access to modern techniques, financial resources, and market linkages, ensuring long-term economic resilience. Through community participation and capacity-building initiatives, VIKSAT enables marginalized groups, particularly women and small-scale farmers, to secure better income opportunities, fostering sustainable development and social equity.

Milestones & Track Record

VIKSAT received the Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra Puraskar national award in 1997 for exceptional contributions in afforestation and wastelands development.
