Masalia block Dumka district , Jharkhand is one of the state’s most underdeveloped regions, home primarily to the Santhal community, traditionally forest dwellers, or “Vanwasi.” Their deep connection to the forest has been disrupted by deforestation and resource depletion , forcing many to migrate for daily wage labor. In response, both the central and state governments have launched welfare schemes to support tribal communities like the Santhal and Pahadias, aiming to improve education, healthcare, livelihoods and infrastructure . To assess the impact of these schemes, Gram Jyoti with support from the Azim Premji Foundation, conducted a baseline survey acroess 70 villages in five Panchayats of Masaliya. The survey aims to evaluate household socio- economic conditions and identify gaps in the implementation of government programs to guide future intervention.

Access to quality healthcare remains a major challenge for the rural and marginalized communities of Jharkhand. Many villages lack basic medical facilities, compelling people—especially women, children, and the elderly—to travel long distances for primary care. To address this gap, Gram Jyoti, with the generous support of SBI Foundation, has been implementing the SBI Sanjeevani – “Clinic on Wheels” initiative across Bokaro, Hazaribagh, and Giridih districts.
This mobile health intervention brings primary healthcare services directly to the doorstep of villagers, ensuring equitable access and reducing financial and physical barriers to treatment. Each mobile unit is designed as a moving clinic equipped with essential diagnostic tools, medicines, and staffed with qualified medical personnel.
