Since
1988
The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) was conceived and established in 1988 by the late Mr. J. R. D. Tata, with the vision of creating an Read moreinstitution dedicated to advanced multidisciplinary research. Located on a picturesque green campus in Bangalore, NIAS serves as a forum for bringing together individuals from diverse intellectual backgrounds. These include administrators and managers from industry and government, leaders in public affairs, distinguished figures from various fields, and scholars from the natural and life sciences, humanities, and social sciences. NIAS is guided by a philosophy that is embodied in its multidisciplinary research teams, which span a wide range of disciplines in the natural and social sciences, humanities, and arts. The Institute is unique in its integrated approach to studying the intersections of science and technology, philosophy, social issues, and leadership. The primary objective of NIAS is to cultivate a diverse group of scholars, managers, and leaders equipped to address the complex challenges facing contemporary India and the global community with insight, sensitivity, confidence, and dedication. The Institute is well-equipped with facilities for conferences, lectures, and theatrical programs. The JRD Tata Auditorium and the lecture halls provide an ideal environment for in-depth discussions and deliberations. Situated on five acres within the lush campus of the Indian Institute of Science, the buildings of NIAS feature distinctive architecture with elegant lines and arched corridors. Fully furnished guest rooms ensure a comfortable stay for visitors and course participants. NIAS also hosts an active program of public lectures, as well as regional, national, and international conferences, symposia, and seminars, organized independently or in collaboration with other institutions, focusing on contemporary research topics and issues of public concern.

School of Natural Sciences and Engineering
The School of Natural Sciences and Engineering (SNSE) conducts original research and engages in policy advocacy across various fields. The faculty is organized into four distinct programs, including the Science Communication Programme, which was established in 2019-20. In the 2020-21 academic year, the school achieved a record in training, with 20 PhD students, 6 post-doctoral fellows, and numerous young research fellows and project assistants, thanks to the faculty's success in securing long-term research funding from multiple sources. The faculty is also highly regarded for their policy advocacy and outreach efforts, which have enhanced NIAS's reputation with both the government and academic institutions. Through these activities, SNSE significantly contributes to the vision of NIAS’s founder, the late JRD Tata.

School of Social Sciences
The School of Social Sciences builds upon a rich tradition established by several of the country’s leading social scientists. Over time, this tradition has evolved within the school’s three programs into a deep and broad-based focus on addressing the challenge of exclusion in India. Each of the three programs has taken distinct paths to explore the processes of exclusion and how they manifest in everyday life. By examining the multiple dimensions and interconnections of these processes, the school has developed a more comprehensive and diverse understanding of the Indian economy and society.
