The School of Natural Sciences and Engineering (SNSE) conducts original research and engages in policy advocacy across various fields. The faculty is organized into four distinct programs, including the Science Communication Programme, which was established in 2019-20. In the 2020-21 academic year, the school achieved a record in training, with 20 PhD students, 6 post-doctoral fellows, and numerous young research fellows and project assistants, thanks to the faculty's success in securing long-term research funding from multiple sources. The faculty is also highly regarded for their policy advocacy and outreach efforts, which have enhanced NIAS's reputation with both the government and academic institutions. Through these activities, SNSE significantly contributes to the vision of NIAS’s founder, the late JRD Tata.

  • School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences builds upon a rich tradition established by several of the country’s leading social scientists. Over time, this tradition has evolved within the school’s three programs into a deep and broad-based focus on addressing the challenge of exclusion in India. Each of the three programs has taken distinct paths to explore the processes of exclusion and how they manifest in everyday life. By examining the multiple dimensions and interconnections of these processes, the school has developed a more comprehensive and diverse understanding of the Indian economy and society.
