The Association for the Mentally Challenged(AMC) works to educate, train and rehabilitate people suffering from mental disorders. It started as a Read moresmall bi-weekly clinic by its founder which later shifted to a one-acre plot of land donated by the State Government and construction of a special school was initiated. AMC partners with NIMHANS(National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences) which guides the association and helps with assessment and consultation.

AMC has impacted 1356 children who have received education at its special school, 912 adults have been trained in various vocations, 2020 affected families are supported, 3750 nutritious meals are served every month and 24 adults have been empowered with appropriate employment.

Programs

  • Vocational Training Centre

    Young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are provided training in various vocations in its vocational training centre.

    The students are taught skills in the fields of weaving, carpentry, computer learning, candle making, paper products, pottery and tailoring. Students who are able to work with minimum supervision are allowed to work at the institution's workshops.

    Periodic exhibitions of products manufactured by the specially-abled adults are conducted at charity bazaars and corporate premises and any sale from these events is remitted back to the trainees.

  • Special School

    AMC manages a special school dedicated to educating children with special needs aged four through sixteen years. The school provides physical training, music, singing, dancing, yoga, painting, handwork and gardening as part of its curriculum. General knowledge is taught as is relevant for each child and they frequently enjoy picnics or outings of learning value.

    The children are taught in the languages they are comfortable with and according to their mental capabilities besides providing mid-day meals. Parents, doctors and teachers have regular meetings to keep track of each child’s progress. The school is operated with assistance from the State Government of Karnataka.

  • Child Guidance Clinics

    AMC facilitates the visit of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers to its centres every month. These professionals help the parents and staff to conduct broad assessments and relevant guidance is given to help with their work. Its linkages with NIMHANS enable it to access services of assessment and consultation on a regular basis.

  • Day Care Centre

    For people with severe developmental disabilities, AMC manages a daycare centre where trained staff takes care of their needs and rehabilitation. These individuals are kept engaged by involving them in activities like arranging beads, sanding wood, creating balls of yarn and watering plants.

  • Samruddhi Programme

    This programme aims to empower the families of mentally challenged people. These families face the challenge of caring for and supporting mentally disabled individuals for life. It attempts to bring these families together into parent self-help groups that help to connect them and support one another emotionally and with information.

    AMC also skills the mothers of its beneficiaries by training them in vocations to enable them to earn extra income and be financially stable.

  • Special Education For The Children With Special Needs & Enable Life Skill Training

    It is approximated that 2% of the Indian Population is suffering from various types of mental illness making it a pressing issue to be addressed. NGO’s like AMC have an important role to play in caring for these individuals. AMC lends various kinds of services to the children & adults with intellectual disability. In order to make it a holistic approach towards caring for these individuals, AMC makes an humble attempt to handhold the families of these individuals and empower them. Through The Special Education Programme. AMC is catering to the special needs such as learning disabilities, communication disorders, emotional and behavioural disorders, physical disabilities and developmental disabilities. This helps in the child’s overall development. Each classroom is comprised of students with varying needs. These students need a curriculum tailored to his/her individual development needs. The Special School enables this through its specially designed class room sessions.The education of intellectually challenged children has to be in a way that takes into consideration the particular needs of the child and understanding the limitations. The Special School addresses this needs through its specially designed classroom sessions. Children are aided in their development through workshops in creative fields like dance, music, painting and crafts, sports and physical training. They are provided support through physiotherapy, speech therapy and periodic evaluation to monitor the development of each child. There is constant upgrading of the teaching techniques, assessment methods and tools to monitor progress. AMC gives these children a conducive environment, to ensure that despite the challenges they are facing in their lives, these children get to experience happy space at AMC. AMC ensures that these children participate in various Sports and Cultural events across Bangalore and outside providing an excellent platform for them to interact with others. Yoga therapy provides relief to the children with behavioral problems and asana help them with their digestive process as well as mobility functions. Children are served milk, ragi porridge with vitamin supplements in the morning and healthy nutritious meal for lunch. Children are also given two sets of uniforms and two pairs of shoes.

    The Vocational Training Centre of AMC is serving the purpose of occupational therapy and rehabilitation of adults with intellectual development disorder (IDD). This center is serving the most crucial needs of the families and the society to include them in the main stream of economic activity. With limitations related to comprehension, vocabulary, ability to read and write, they are to be trained in simple manual activities. The multi category vocational training center has two sections- Vocational Centre which is training adults with IDD (women and men) in variety of vocations like weaving, candle making, needle work, tailoring, paper products, etc. Those who have been trained and are able to work with minimum supervision are put under Sheltered workshop programme. Theory of Change

AMC is is one of the oldest institution of its kind in Karnataka and the second at the National level addressing the problems faced by individuals suffering with intellectual disability disorder(IDD) and their families. AMC has been working since 6 decades to address the special needs of these special individuals and their families throughout their life cycle. Today AMC supports about 115 children, adolescents, adults and their families.
Mission: To promote the independence, productivity, integration into community and self- determination of individuals with IDD through a coordinated program of research, training, technical assistance and dissemination activities.
There is constant upgrading of the teaching techniques, assessment methods and tools to monitor progress. The constant interaction between parents and teachers helps resolve any behavioral or other problems that the child may be facing. AMC works relentlessly to ensure a conducive environment for learning and rehabilitation of these children and adults with special needs who hail from lesser-privileged backgrounds by providing facilities and services that are on par with the best in the country.

School

from 15 practising various vocations at AMC’s
sheltered workshop and earning a decent stipend.
One of the inspiring success stories are of Mr. T.K
Jagannatha who has been employed at AMC as an
office assistant. He could overcome his challenges
because of the training at AMC. His family is proud
of his achievements and his financial independence.
He received an award from the Women and Child
Development & Disabled & Senior Citizens
Empowerment Department in acknowledgment of
his efforts in overcoming the challenges.
Mr. Jagannatha joined AMC as a 14 year old boy.
He progressed from the Special School to the
Vocational training center at the age of 19. He
learnt various vocational skills such as paper bag
making, weaving jute mats and carpets, weaving on
the looms. He went on to participate in various
shows and competitions over the years--drawing,
sports and even the Special Olympics. In 2008 he
got appointed as Office Assistant at AMC and
carries out his responsibilities sincerely.
Recently Mr Nitesh R is has been appointed as an
office assistant at L&W Constructions and is
receiving admiration from his manager and
colleagues for his work. AMC is appreciated for
training him.

of the beneficiaries (not limiting to the
beneficiaries) also elevates the organisation’s

initiatives like the self-help group, skill training &
job creation for the mothers/parents of
beneficiaries are improving the quality of life of
these families translating into better care for their
ward with IDD. The confidence and the financial
strength these women gather through this
programme are empowering.
 IDD condition has no cure and managing the
condition to be able to carry on with the day to
day activities is the prime objective of a
professional care giver. In this context, AMC’s
efforts in extending care to 45 children and 115
adults is of great significance.
