Issue

Cancer of the regions of head and neck is the commonest cancer in India and is responsible for nearly one-third of total cancer deaths in India. The present health statistics indicate that cancer of the ‘head and neck’ will become a major health problem for India in the years to come, in view of rampant tobacco consumption, which is its main causative factor. (2) In the back ground of this gloomy reality is the fact that this type of cancer is more common amongst the poorer socio-economic classes, due to malnutritional conditions, bad oral hygiene, poor general resistance and, last but not the least, widespread tobacco usage. It afflicts the young and the old alike, and is more common amongst the males, who are largely the source of family income in India.

Action

Actions are taken as per the objects of the trust, collectively referred to as "Project Cancer": i. Programmes to raise public awareness on the importance of early detection & scientific treatment of cancer, even in remote & tribal areas. ii. Training programmes to facilitate capacity enhancement of medical cadre, particularly at the rural level, so that they are aware of the preventive aspects of cancer and are adept at its early decision. iii. Create awareness that the quality of life of terminally ill cancer patients can be improved and they can be be made pain free in the end stage of their life AND working to set up palliative care facilities iv. Given the high incidence of head & neck cancer in India, develop a national institute devoted to head & neck cancer, a state-of-the-art center of excellence working on preventive strategies, diagnostic programmes, clinical & basic research so that we are able to find answers to our own national problem in this area. v. To develop appropriate treatment facilities for all cancers. vi. Programs in the national perspective, like conducting screening camps.
