Programs

  • Literacy Programme

As a global organization, Room to Read addresses the critical issue of illiteracy by providing innovative literacy programmes that equip children with reading and writing skills. They establish libraries in primary schools and train teachers and librarians to engage young learners effectively. The programme has shown significant success, enabling children to read faster and with better comprehension compared to their peers in non-programme schools. Room to Read aims to break the cycle of childhood illiteracy and poverty in a single generation, making education accessible and transformative for millions of children worldwide.

  • Publishing Initiative

Since 2000, the organisation has published 6,100+ children's books in 50+ languages and 23 countries, distributing 36 million copies to 49,000+ schools worldwide. They provide literacy textbooks, benefiting 28 million students. Local creators write and illustrate the books, published by in-country teams, adapting trade books for underserved communities. Their work combines magic and literacy, ensuring access to culturally relevant materials. Annually, they partner with locals for children's books, literacy materials, and young adult literature, supporting gender equality. They advocate for literacy initiatives, diverse literature, and sustainable publishing. Millions of children's books are purchased and distributed from local publishers to enrich school libraries and classrooms.

  • Girl's Education Programme

The organisation empowers girls through life skills, promoting gender equality in education. A Teacher's Guide aids parents and teachers in engaging girls on the topic. Girls develop critical thinking, empathy, and self-reliance to overcome challenges like gender bias. They discover strength, advocate for themselves, and chart their path through classes and workshops. Room to Read aims to end illiteracy and gender inequality by providing girls with support for just $25 a month. It invests in sustainable partnerships, focusing on girls' transitions to secondary school. Collaborating with officials, they create girl-friendly learning environments for lasting impact.
