1991
**Profile Overview** The year 1991 marked a turning point for the Deaf community in Andhra Pradesh, thanks to the visionary efforts of J.S.K. Rao Read more, also known as Anil. Driven by a deep passion for the cause of the Deaf, Rao befriended 12 deaf teenagers, nurturing them into confident and inspiring leaders. His mentorship instilled hope, self-belief, and a sense of purpose in these young individuals, transforming them from withdrawn youths into dynamic changemakers. Rao pioneered grassroots-level empowerment programs using Sign Language, advocating for its recognition as the natural language of the Deaf in India. His tenure with the Rehabilitation Council of India brought crucial issues to light, paving the way for significant reforms. He also encouraged the Deaf community to embrace technology and self-reliance. Although Rao passed away in 2001, his legacy endures through the leaders he empowered, who continue to inspire and uplift the Deaf community across India.
