Operating in regions often characterized as 'media dark zones,' these communities face isolation and limited access to vital information necessary for addressing socio-economic disparities. Charkha is dedicated to empowering these communities by building their capacity to articulate their concerns at local, state, and national levels and facilitating access to resources to assert their rights and entitlements. The organization's direct engagement with youth from historically marginalized communities in remote villages focuses on enhancing their leadership skills through information, knowledge, and media literacy. This empowerment enables them to utilize various media formats to highlight the challenges they encounter in socio-economic development, amplifying their voices in media landscapes typically dominated by urban and hegemonic narratives. By recognizing and harnessing their agency, they access the media as the fourth pillar of democracy. Charkha's sustained growth and impact over nearly three decades are attributed to the dedication of individuals who have collaborated with the network, enriching it mutually. They have brought visibility and development to 'difficult' areas where few endeavors for change. Vision: To empower communities in remote areas to take charge of their own development through creative media use. Mission: To establish sustainable two-way communication networks that enable underserved and vulnerable communities to benefit from development mechanisms and advocate for policy changes.
