People for Animals(PFA) is working to give animals their due place and respect as fellow inhabitants on the earth. It strongly believes that cruelty a Read morend apathy towards animals leads to irreparable damage to our environment, economy and well-being. Over the years of Its existence PFA has initiated many positive reforms to change laws and mindsets towards the way animals are treated as commodities. Its many campaigns have resulted in the total ban of transporting cattle by train. PFA members have been appointed on boards of laboratory ethics committees to check usage of animals as test subjects, bullock cart races have been stopped in Andhra Pradesh, creation of regulations against whipping of horses in racecourses, stopping plans to rear ostriches for slaughter in Karnataka, development of maintenance standards for horses on the beaches of Chennai. It has taken action to provide food to animals affected due to natural disasters, reduced the occurrence of animal sacrifices, PFA members are part of the film censor board to check abuse of animals in films, plight of animals in circuses have led to a ban on the display of endangered wild animals. Its members patrol highways to check against overloading and smuggling of animals for killing, Its petition resulted in packaged food being labelled with green or brown indicators indicating vegetarian and non-vegetarian food respectively. PFA has filed and won many court cases in defence of wrong practices being followed against animals for instance, It won a case which favoured sterilisation of dogs rather than municipal killing, camels used to provide beach rides were returned to their natural habitats, a ban on mini and mobile zoos leading to the rescue of many animals, putting an end to bull fighting in Goa. It has also won petitions to make dissection of animals optional in biology classes in schools and a direction to the state Governments of Punjab and Haryana to set up animal hospitals. Its future plans are to set up over six hundred shelters, one in every district in India, supported by ambulance services, a cow shelter in every municipal area, to extend animal sacrifice laws across states, provide training on organic farming to farmers in a bid to encourage chemical free produce, promote alternatives to using animals in labs, make animal welfare a part of education, policies to ensure humane transportation of animals and creating a fund to make sure of the financial stability of PFA. It encourages vegetarianism and also helps interested people to set up branches of PFA in their localities to further the beneficial cause of animal welfare.
