Union of India (2004), which led to the Vishaka Guidelines, POSH Act (2013), and POCSO Act (2012).


Issue

Violence against women and children is a widespread, deeply rooted crisis impacting safety, dignity, and equity. Despite legal protections, stigma, silence, and systemic gaps continue to hinder prevention and redressal. Global Data: 243 million women and girls (15–49) faced sexual/physical violence by a partner in one year 1 billion children (2–17) have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence India (NCRB 2019): 1.48 lakh crimes against children reported — 35% under POCSO Majority of abusers are known to the child Over 50% of abuse cases go unreported Workplace Sexual Harassment: 38% of Indian women have faced harassment at work (INBA, 2017) Barriers include stigma, poor enforcement, and lack of awareness Estimated economic loss: $3.7 trillion annually (McKinsey) The need for prevention, awareness, and survivor support is urgent. Ending gender-based violence requires collective action, stronger systems, and informed communities.


Action

Sakshi’s work spans judicial education, survivor support, and grassroots engagement. Its initiatives use research, social arts, and policy advocacy to shift mindsets and build safe, accountable communities. Core Programs include: The Rakshin Project – preventing child sexual abuse through youth training Women Safety Accelerator Fund (WSAF) – scaling safety innovations LEAD Project – promoting economic empowerment WEFT – gender equity in textiles (with UN Women) Sakshi has MoUs with the Ministry of Youth Affairs (NSS) and Ministry of Rural Development (NRLM), enabling national reach across 40 lakh students and 10 crore rural households. Present in multiple states, Sakshi works with youth, teachers, frontline workers, and institutions to create informed communities and drive systemic change.

Impact

For over 30 years, Sakshi has led the fight against gender-based violence through legal reform, judicial education, grassroots action, and public engagement. Key Achievements: Instrumental in Vishaka vs. State of Rajasthan and development of the PoSH Act, 2013, impacting 1.51 million workplaces Advocated for child protection, contributing to the POCSO Act, 2012 Led gender-sensitization training for judiciary across 5 Asia-Pacific countries Created the Handbook on Combating Gender Stereotypes to support gender-sensitive jurisprudence Program Reach: The Rakshin Project (launched 2018): Active in 1268 colleges across 32 states/UTs, training 89,238 NSS volunteers WSAF Partnership: Improved safety in the Indian tea sector, reaching 33,980 workers, 99,100 community members, and 98 tea estates Sakshi continues to drive systems-level change through law, education, and community-led prevention strategies.
