Agni Raksha is a Not for Profit Organisation (NPO) started in the year 1999 (registered with Registrar of Trusts) to provide medical treatment and a h Read moreolistic rehabilitation process for burn victims from poor families, especially women and children. We create awareness among the communities about burns, its prevention etc. Over a period of time, encountering new challenges and emerging needs, Agni Raksha has diversified its reach and the strategies to ensure holistic rehabilitation for burns survivors. These include psychological support and counselling services, reconstruction surgeries to minimise physical deformities and enhance physical appearance, physiotherapy to augment the functional abilities, creating legal awareness and providing legal assistance to seek justice, prevent domestic violence etc. Burn survivors undergo tremendous trauma in life owing to the excruciating pain, mangled physical appearance, lack of livelihood opportunities, economic deprivation, discrimination in families and society, social exclusion etc.
Issue
1. The identified women hail from very poor families, living in the most vulnerable slums in Bangalore city; 2. The women who are trained in bakery and are involved in Bliss Feu, and also the other women burn survivors and women living in exceptionally difficult circumstance, susceptible to burns, often neglect their sexual and reproductive health. Hence Agni Raksha organizes screening and testing for diabetes, hypertension, anemia, breast and cervical cancer periodically; 3. Utilization of menstrual cups and indigenous napkins are being promoted in the identified slums in Bangalore city; 4. Other awareness programs held in the community are prevention of gender-based violence, non-communicable diseases, etc.; 5. Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Collectives (Adolescent girls, and Young mothers) have been formed by Agni Raksha, and various topics are discussed to sensitize them on their rights, whilst also providing them opportunities toward skill development and income generating activities. 6. Women in slums are vulnerably more susceptible to all forms of violence. 7. The economic instability, illiteracy, unemployment, lack of support systems, alcoholism, poverty, etc., has increased the risk of women to violence. 8. The spouses, especially the men are not just insensitive but are also not conscious towards the needs of women, especially for their sexual and reproductive rights. 9. The women in the identified 20slums, work mainly has housemaids and as waste collectors which is unskilled and less paid, with long working hours. 10. Their mental health status is not stable, they are very interested in meeting their immediate needs and seldom think about long term changes leading them to incur debts and more dependency on their spouses and other family members. 11. The spouses, who are alcoholics without any steady income too inflict violence on the women, due to their inability to provide for their families. 12. Masculinity and paternal stereotypes are seen dominating in these communities, silencing the rights of the women. 13. Majority of these women are found to be lacking awareness and importance of their health and not caring for their health. 14. They are not only neglected by their family members but are also ignorant and not aware of their basic rights. 15. Through Agni Raksha’s various interventions in the 20 slums, it has been observed that the lack of knowledge on GBV, have restrained many of the stakeholders in not addressing this issue. 16. The health workers in Primary Health Centres (PHCs), school teachers and other stakeholders also are unaware and not trained in addressing this pressing issue in the community. 17. One of the most heinous crimes against women are inflicting harm through burns, and by driving them to self-immolate themselves due to the emotional violence inflicted on them by their family members.
