Programs

  • Character Development Programme

It works to develop its students' characters. As a result, students care for their families and communities and have a desire to make a positive contribution to society. Its students have petitioned government officials to provide better sanitation, recycle waste materials, fed the homeless, visited nursing homes and cleaned up their neighbourhoods.

  • Education Programme

It provides education to children who come from underprivileged families and cannot afford the same under normal circumstances.

The medium of education is English, while Hindi and Kannada are also part of the curriculum. The holistic educational system includes an arts programme which helps students express their emotions, music classes that are initiated at a young age along with a computer training course which starts in Grade 1. Christel House also rewards a group of outstanding students with a trip to Goa where its sponsors, the Karma Royal Group, reserve the Royal Goa Beach Club exclusively for the children’s enjoyment.

  • College & Careers Programme

Christel House Bangalore provides help with board exams, such as the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) at the tenth-grade level and the Pre-University Certificate (PUC) of the Karnataka State Education Board, equivalent to twelfth-grade.

JIVA, its career guidance program, helps students make informed choices regarding their future education and career paths. It helps exceptional students secure scholarships and find ways to support their career objectives.

  • Community Outreach Programme

It works with parents, conducting regular parent-teacher workshops, involving parents in their child's development, and creating a parent-teacher team to work together for the best interests of the child. Medical professionals offer community programs on hygiene and illness prevention. Through its partnership with ACCEPT, an NGO that educates people about HIV & AIDS.

It has also established a community awareness programme and has helped more than 40 parents secure employment. Additionally, a thrift movement teaches parents the importance and habit of saving. Instead of money, parents are asked to contribute to their children's education by volunteering 40 hours annually at the school, assisting with gardening, cooking, and laundry services.

  • Health & Nutrition Programme

It partners with M.S. Ramaiah Medical College & Hospital, Bangalore, to provide regular medical examinations, and all children are immunized according to WHO standards. New students undergo a physical exam to identify malnutrition or any other ailments. All the students are provided with breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack with milk, in order to provide more than 80% of a child’s daily calorific needs since most students do not receive proper nutrition at home.

In addition, it provides showers and a laundry where uniforms are washed and ironed weekly, as many children do not have access to soap and running water at home. Additionally, a physical education programme promotes health and wellness leading the children to achieve awards at the annual interstate athletic competitions.

Besides, students work on multiple inter disciplinary projects focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by UN as part of their Science and Social Science academic programs. Special efforts are made to provide remedial lessons to those who are less proficient in academics.

Our structure is unique, 100% of donor contributions will fund programs and services directly benefiting the children of Christel House as Christel DeHaan, our founder, covers all Administrative & Fundraising overhead expenses in perpetuity.

Christel House India partnered with Atal Nagar Vikas Pradhikaran (ANVP-formerly NRDA), to educate underserved children in the Atal Nagar (formerly Naya Raipur) area, Chhattisgarh. ANVP built the school facility in phases according to Christel House standards on a 5-acre Land parcel and provided all initial capital expenses like furniture, equipment, etc. Christel House India is responsible for managing and funding the operations of the Learning Center including student admissions and staff recruitment. Total built up area – 1,10,000 sq. ft. 33 classrooms, computer lab, science lab, music room, dining hall, medical room, staff room, art & craft room, shower and laundry facility, sports field and administration area. The Learning Center in Atal Nagar, Chhattisgarh will add 70 students in KG every year until it reaches its full strength of 910 students from K- Grade 12.

Challenges
Christel House is a day school and the students come from severely impoverished homes and live in the urban slums of Bangalore and severely impoverished neighbourhood in Atal Nagar. Most of our students are first generation learners. They have inadequate support facilities in their home environment. They face social-emotional challenges created by lack of social, economic and family support. They are also subjected to trauma in their homes and communities.

Parents of Christel House students need to be educated about the importance of education of their wards and the long-term benefits it would bring into their families to check early dropouts. Christel House also needs to work with the parents on creating a conducive atmosphere for the students when they get back home to reap the full benefits of its education programs. These are extremely challenging tasks. Throughout the school year, we work with parents and students on addressing the above issues.

Lack of parental support shifts the onus of student success to the school and this puts tremendous stress on teachers and school leaders. In addition, longer school working hours & days and the need for additional pastoral care add to the teacher burnout. The additional need for psychological and counselling support puts stress on school resources.

The COVID 19 pandemic has impacted the children and their education most severely, especially the children from underserved communities. The learning gap and socio– emotional gap created in these children during COVID 19 pandemic will take a while to overcome. Many students have lost interest in studies and we see change in their behavior patterns after COVID lockdowns and school closure. Bringing them back on track will be the biggest challenge for next couple of years.
