Indian Literacy Project (ILP) works in rural and remote areas in India to improve literacy rates, thereby empowering local communities. It has worked Read moreon almost 100 projects, in 17 states, and in over 2200 villages. It works to establish new government schools in areas where there are none, improve enrollment and retention rates in schools, and improve the quality of learning in schools. It works with NGOs, local governments, and local communities to reach its goal. Through Making Preschools Fun, one of its current projects, ILP works in remote villages in Karnataka to modify preschools and improve the quality. It trains teachers, implements games and playing material into the curriculum and engages mothers. These changes resulted in increased attendance and enrollment, and improved learning levels. Activity Based Learning is implemented in primary schools in Andhra Pradesh, where learning is made fun and interactive, and education is used to complement the curiosity and enthusiasm children naturally have. In order to implement this program, teachers were trained intensively. ILP is working to transform the way Social Sciences are taught in government schools, by collaborating with teachers. ILP uses Google Earth to develop a curriculum that includes interactive stories and virtual journeys to teach. ILP will train teachers and implement this program in many states. ILP works with graduating students, providing them counseling and mentoring to help them choose courses for higher study and explore career options. In addition, ILP also provides scholarships for students who are in need of financial support to continue their education.


Issue

There are multiple issues like: AWC are not giving priority for pre-school education Children /students studying in government schools are not attaining age and grade appropriate skills and competencies Due to lack of experiential learning, science /STEM education is done on rote method Government school children need handholding and guidance towards there career choices as their families are not fully equipped to guide them. Lack of knowledge and gaps leading students to opt for courses which are not desirable for them. Gaps in terms of 21st century skills such computer literacy, English literacy, exposure to electronics leads to students either not getting jobs or not getting into proper jobs to earn their livelihood.


Action

ILP has been working on Schooling, Learning and Earning - three thematic focus areas. Schooling: Enrollment, retention, attendance monitoring, transition management, community participation, strengthening SMC, parental care towards education, teacher and school functioning - monitoring through communities and various such programs. Learning: Multi Dimensional Learning Space (MDLS) is a flagship program where learning outcome related programs such as child friendly school libraries, reading level assessments, learning level assessments, lab-in a-box science kit to ensure experiential learning, digital contents and enhancing class room engagement through open source teaching content are worked out. We also run Village learning centres and work on foundation learning related issues. We have a very strong working experience in pre-school education (early childhood education) component of ECCD. Earning: Career guidance and counseling, life skills, ICT training for teachers and students, spoken English and other such programs are being carried out.

ILP has its presence in 10 states. 5000+ AWC in improving Preschool education, 14000+ Government schools in improving Schooling, learning and earning focused areas. ILP is working directly through chapters and volunteer participation in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. ILP is also working through NGO partnerships in 7 states - there are about 25 NGO partners in ILP network. ILP has been in partnership with Government of Karnataka, SCERT, Kalyan Karnataka Regional Development Board, TN School Education Department, IITM and other prestigious organizations in having strategic alliances to enhance the outcome and improve the learning processes of children in Government schools.

Programs

  • KMSPP Consortium Project with JSW Foundation support

    Build 150 model schools on a Consortium approach and ILP is playing the LEAD NGO role. Sikshana Foundation, QUEST, Yuva Unstoppable, Sambodhi, Udhyam Foundation are the other partners of the Consortium. Each of the partner will work on identified program components in the same set of schools to improve the schools in a comprehensive manner.

  • Hands on Science and Electronics

    The program will be implemented covering the entire state of Tamil Nadu. 250 schools in 38 districts and 1 to 3 lakh students will be covered on exposure to Electronics through a newly innovated Electronic kit by IITM for the next five years. GoTN and IITM have signed MoU with ILP.

  • Karnataka Model School Pathways Program (KMSPP)

    We aim to transform ~180 schools and its co-located anganwadis, reaching ~50k students across 5 districts and provide a replicable blueprint for NEP adoption in the state

    Vision: Establish Model schools as a pathway to scale best practices and improve quality of school education in Karnataka

    Mission: Demonstrate in a period of 3 years, a replicable and scalable approach by transforming ~180 schools at GP level in 5 districts by 2025, enabling NEP adoption in Karnataka
