Most mainstream approaches to digital technologies for development are either techno-utopic or promote a market-fundamentalist approach, often both together. A digital makeover of economies and societies has become a convenient opportunity for wholesale corporatisation of social systems, displacing the cornerstone ethics of democratic participation, commons, social justice and gender equality from development discourse. Our work in the areas of education, gender, governance, community informatics and internet/digital policies push the boundaries of existing vocabulary and practice, exploring new development and social change frameworks. Network building is key to our work. IT for Change is in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Programs

  • Internet Governance

We conduct studies and promote national and international laws and regulations that acknowledge and support the Internet's role as a tool for social justice and equality. IT for Change, a submission to the Forum on Information and Democracy's Working Group on Artificial Intelligence.

The Working Group sought feedback on three crucial areas: (i) AI system development and deployment; (ii) accountability frameworks; and (iii) AI governance.

  • Education

In collaboration with public education systems, the Center for Education and Technology, IT for Change, aims to develop participatory models that enhance teacher agency, school autonomy, adolescent education, and community involvement. To connect, develop, and collaborate at the school, district, and state levels, our field initiatives systemically integrate digital technology. Communities of practice, cooperative OER models, digital intelligence, and free and open technology are all topics of our research.

Our work and research contribute to state and national curricula as well as the courses we offer in partnership with academic institutions. We challenge popular models that centralize control with bureaucracy and vendors or privatize education through outsourcing in our advocacy work with government institutions and civil society. We also make the case for the need and potential for empowering students to make their own decisions when it comes to digital technology
