Diocese Of Thanjavur Society

After splitting from the former See of Mylapore, the papal bull "Ex Primaevae Ecclesiae" established the Diocese of Thanjavur on November 22, 1952. It Read more was forced to wait an additional four months for the appointment of a new bishop. The first Bishop of Thanjavur was Most Rev. Dr. R.A. Sundaram, a distinguished son of the soil, who was appointed on February 4, 1953, and consecrated in Chennai on March 19, 1953. Remarkably, Msgr. Bonnand, the Apostolic Prefect of Pondicherry at the time, suggested that Thanjavur be established as an Apostolic Vicariate as early as 1843.
