About

  • Headquarters

    Chennai, Tamil Nadu

  • Since

    1992

With the underlying theory that substandard living conditions have an impact on people's health and well-being both individually and collectively, its Read more main focus is on tackling health and poverty-related concerns. Six initiatives in four Indian states are supported by SEI. Five of these are approved referral institutions by the Indian government that offer specialised care to leprosy patients for a range of issues. The majority of beneficiaries—between 15% and 20% on average—are children, who primarily have reconstructive procedures to address their disability.

Programs

  • Tertiary Care Leprosy Services

In three states—Andhra Pradesh (three hospitals), Karnataka (one hospital), and Tamil Nadu (one hospital)—SEI provides funding for the tertiary care services provided by five institutions spread over five districts. The following lists the specifics of the five projects:

Emmaus Swiss Leprosy Hospital Project, Andhra Pradesh's Palamaner, Chittoor District
GRETNALTES Hospital, Andhra Pradesh, Morumpodi, Tenali
Hubli, Karnataka's Hubli Hospital for the Handicapped
Andhra Pradesh's Rural India Self-development Trust (RISDT), located at Kathipudi, East Godavari
Hospital for Leprosy Sacred Heart, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu

  • Prevention of Impairment and Disability Projects

The implementation of disability prevention and medical education in leprosy (DISPEL) for ten years gave rise to the POID initiatives. Early detection, treatment, referral, and disability management are the main focuses of the POID project. It puts the community first and gives it the authority to make decisions for the health and welfare of its members. The project works with district health systems to guarantee that services are accessible in the person's neighbourhood. The POID project is currently being carried out in three districts across two states (Andhra Pradesh & Maharashtra) in association with ALERT India and the Maharashtra State Leprosy Society.

One of SEI's major projects, POID, was recognised in 2013 at the International Leprosy Congress (ILC) in Brussels with the "Young Scientist" award.
